Recently, thanks to generous parishioner donations, the help of volunteers and the initiative of a parish priest who isn’t afraid of crawling under the church or using power tools, our visual display system in the church has had a much-needed and long-overdue upgrade. The nearly twenty-year-old data projector (and around fifty-year-old overhead projector screen) made way for new LED displays.
The Second Vatican Council’s Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy (no. 30) stated that:
To promote active participation, the people should be encouraged to take part by means of acclamations, responses, psalmody, antiphons, and songs, as well as by actions, gestures, and bodily attitudes. And at the proper times all should observe a reverent silence.
For many years, print resources such as hymn books and song sheets were relied upon for helping the assembly participate actively in its sung prayer. Many places still use these. Yet a number of factors have seen parishes such as ours adopt visual display technologies, such as the availability of hymn books and the desire to source music from a wide range of composers and publishers.
We hope that our new system will help all of us to participate fully, consciously and actively in the liturgy.
