Over recent months, the parish Liturgy Committee, including Fr Janu and Fr Alby, have undertaken a full evaluation and review of the expected practices within our Sunday Masses. We have done this with the aim of deepening our community in its relationship with God and living Jesus’ mission, by forming a diverse, inclusive community of prayer that participates fully, consciously and actively in the best liturgical celebrations it can offer.

As an essential liturgical role through which Christ is made present in the proclamation of the Scriptures, we considered the structure of the Ministry of the Word. While we have followed the current Reader and Commentator structure for several decades, this was established at a time where the Commentator fulfilled a larger role within the Mass.

The Liturgy Committee has decided to adopt a different model, similar to that used in a number of other parishes, that will allow us to more effectively fulfil the principle articulated in the Introduction to the Lectionary for Mass (no. 52):

… Whenever there is more than one reading, it is better to assign the readings to different readers, if available.

In addition, it will allow the two Ministers of the Word at each Mass to share the ministerial roles more equally.

From the commencement of the next roster (3 and 4 August), the allocation of roles within the Ministry of the Word at Sunday Masses will change. The responsibilities of each of the ministers that serve each Sunday will be as follows:

Reader 1

  • Welcome the assembly and read the introduction to Mass
  • Proclaim the First Reading
  • Proclaim the Responsorial Psalm (at the ambo) if it is not sung

Reader 2

  • Carry the Book of Gospels into the church in the Entrance Procession
  • Proclaim the Second Reading
  • Proclaim the intentions of the Prayer of the Faithful

While it will take some getting used to a change in routine, we hope that this will be easy to follow and allow for a more balanced and distributed allocation of roles within the Ministry of the Word.

If you have any questions or feedback about this change, please contact the Liturgy Committee.

We thank our Ministers of the Word for their support of this change, and for their service to God and our parish community.

  1. Hi Folks

    Thank you for your email.

FYI: I am a parishioner of Guardian Angels Parish in Wynnum, Queensland. The Capuchins have cared for my parish since 1945.

Our Lady of Mt Carmel was the Convent of the Sisters of Mercy and the High School I attended.

Your email mentions a change to structure of the Ministry of the Word. I like your ideas. Guardian Angels does it a little e different.

I try to look after the “Ministry of Music” for a couple of our Guardian Angels Sunday Masses. Your www page has been very helpful over the years. But unfortunately, I have not been able to access it. Is there any chance I may be able to access once again.

Please pass on my thanks to your music co-ordinator

God bless to you and parishioners of Our Lady of Mr Carmel.
