Our celebration of the Easter Triduum has now ended, but the Easter Season is certainly not over!
The Easter Season is fifty days in length. After spending forty days preparing for Easter, we have seven weeks to rejoice in the great miracle of the resurrection. We have until Pentecost to celebrate how we are blessed with eternal life through Christ’s sacrifice and our baptism.
At the Easter Vigil, four adults passed through the waters of baptism and so now share in that same eternal life. As the Blessing of Water in the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) tells us, through the waters of baptism they were “filled with new life as [God’s] very own children”. It also reminds us that “from all who are baptised in water and the Holy Spirit, [God] has formed one people, united in [his] Son, Jesus Christ.”
The fact that we have all been formed into one people, a people filled with new life, should be something to celebrate. Throughout the Easter Season, we will recall our baptism and celebrate our salvation through the Rite of Sprinkling of Holy Water in our Introductory Rites of Mass.
During Lent, we placed our trust in God’s forgiveness through praying the Confiteor (I confess…) and Kyrie Eleison (Lord, have mercy). Now we celebrate that our in baptism (as Fr. Paul sang in the Exsultet) we have been “washed clean of sin and freed from all defilement” so we may be “restored to grace to grow together in holiness”.
