The Liturgy of the Word for Children allows children to gather and celebrate the Liturgy of the Word at Mass, adapted to meet their needs and level of understanding.  It seeks to encourage the children’s full, conscious and active participation in the Mass and complement parents’ efforts to raise their children in the practice of the faith.

The Vatican Directory for Masses with Children provides guidance about celebrating the Liturgy of the Word for Children, and the adaptations that may be made.  In addition to adaptations to the readings, aspects of the rituals can also be adapted.

With the priest presiding over the whole celebration, the leader of the celebration may give a homily or reflection on the readings.  Greater use can be made of discussion, dialogue and images.  In addition to the Profession of Faith and Prayer of the Faithful, children can also be invited to respond to God’s word through song, dialogue, gestures and movement.

We’re pleased to announce that the Liturgy of the Word for Children will begin on Sunday 7 September 2025 at 10:00 am Mass.  Children in primary school are welcome to participate with their parents’ permission.  Come to church as usual, and the children will be invited forward by the priest when the Liturgy of the Word begins.
