The Liturgy of the Word for Children allows children to gather and celebrate the Liturgy of the Word at Mass, adapted to meet their needs and level of understanding. It seeks to encourage the children’s full, conscious and active participation in the Mass and complement parents’ efforts to raise their children in the practice of the faith.

The Vatican Directory for Masses with Children provides guidance about celebrating the Liturgy of the Word for Children. Firstly, an adapted version of the Lectionary (the book of readings proclaimed at Mass) can be used. This Lectionary for Masses with Children uses a simpler translation of the Bible. On some occasions, it may only include the first or second reading, or shortened forms of the readings. All of this is done with the intention of focusing on what children can more readily understand.

In addition, ministers preparing and leading celebrations of the Liturgy of the Word for Children may choose to focus on particular readings. The Gospel, however, must always be proclaimed and be experienced as the high point of the Liturgy of the Word, just as it is with an adult assembly. The selection and proclamation of the readings is crucially important, as “when the Sacred Scriptures are read in the Church, God himself speaks to his people, and Christ, present in his word, proclaims the Gospel” (General Instruction of the Roman Missal, 29).
