Advent season

The Gospels of the Season of Advent speak to the focus of the season: preparation for the celebration of Christmas, and preparation for the return of Christ at the end of time. In particular, during this Year B Scripture cycle, we hear of:

  • Jesus’ call to “stay awake”, not knowing the time or hour of the Master’s coming
  • The proclamation of John the Baptist to prepare a way for the Lord
  • John the Evangelist’s introduction of John the Baptist, and the promise that someone greater is coming, who will baptise with the Holy Spirit
  • The annunciation of the Lord to Mary by the angel Gabriel, and Mary’s acceptance of God’s plan.

Arrangements for Advent

Liturgical arrangements for Advent will once again centre around the Introductory Rites. The Mass each Sunday will open as follows:

  • Entrance Hymn
  • Sign of the Cross and Greeting
  • Introduction by the Priest
  • Lighting of the candles of the Advent wreath (instrumental music may be played as the candles are lit)
  • Penitential Act (2nd form, spoken)
  • Kyrie (may be said or sung)
  • Collect Prayer

From the First Sunday of Advent, we move into Year B of the cycle of Sunday
readings, with a focus on the Gospel of Mark.

Like last year, each Sunday will have a prompt for reflection displayed on the projection screen after the homily. The PowerPoint templates with these prompts will be added to the online catalogue soon.

Mass setting for Advent
